Back finishing or sealing is done to protect the cabinet surfaces that will be hidden from view and, more importantly, to prevent moisture and adhesive from penetrating the panel after installation. The back of factory-finished casework is often not accessible once the unit is installed, so finishing it at the factory ensures a complete, sealed surface on all sides. This helps prevent issues like warping, finish peeling behind the cabinet, and moisture intrusion that could affect the structure over time.

The best practice is to have factory finished casework back finished prior to delivery, so the entire piece arrives ready to install with a full, protected finish. Finishing on site by the installer is unreliable because the back is typically blocked from access once cabinets are in place, making it easy to miss or improperly seal. Leaving the back unfinished is not desirable for durability or long-term performance.
